Aug 04,  · In , King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band – also featuring Louis’ soon-to-be wife Lil Hardin – recorded sides for Gennett. These are believed to be the first Armstrong recordings. One of the songs is “Dippermouth Blues,” co-penned by Armstrong and Oliver.

The stunning thing in these recordings is the emotional and rhythmic intensity achieved by King Oliver's band. Canal Street Blues and Dippermouth Blues have a cathartic energy that I don't hear in other bands again until the advent of the Beatles and the Grateful Deadit's King Oliver's on-the-edge soulfulness, something that is more than.

"Dippermouth Blues" is a song first recorded by King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band for Gennett Records in April and for Okeh Records in June of that same year. It is most often attributed to Joe "King" Oliver, though some have argued that Louis Armstrong was in fact the composer.
