    The "Black Death" was carried to Mediterranean ports, following the trade routes, by infected rats on the ships. How waste contributed to the spread of the disease. People threw food scraps, garbage, and even human waste out of the windows of their homes into the streets below. Open sewers in the street were packed with garbage.
